SAP Continuous Delivery

Continuous Delivery (CD) describes the nearly fully automated workflow in the development and operation process. On the technological level, this comprises the automatic import processes of in-house developments into the test and production systems as well as a feedback to developers on the impact of each change. CD is involved in the context of agile development, DevOps and as a form thereof in the context of Scrum. This agile approach can be transferred to the development and operation process in SAP. SAP provides a system line for this consisting of a development system (D), a test system (Q), and a production system (PROD). Developments are transported along this system line.

After the technical tests have been carried out successfully, Continuous Delivery provides for the automated import of the transport request into the Q system. The subsequent import into the production environment is carried out after successful approval of the functionality tests. If all test cases of the test case library in the test management system have been carried out successfully and approved by the test manager, the tested SAP development is able to go live immediately. The additional integration with the Service Portal and ITSM processes enables semi-automated tests based on ITIL that are controlled centrally. In this way the whole software life cycle is depicted – from the requirement and development to the tests and go-live of the SAP development.

In comparison to Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery with automated transports of developments into the production system and subsequent feedback to developers has two decisive advantages: agile development with short Software Development Life Cycles (SDLC) and simultaneous maintenance of stability of the production systems. This leads to a high degree of automation on a technological level and a resulting short time-to-market figure in SAP. On the basis of this measurable key figure, measures can be taken to reach a higher efficiency in the development and operation process.

Our customers use REALTECH Transport Management to carry out automated transports on the SAP system level. This is based on the STMS and also provides additional comfort functions and enhanced safety and transparency. In comparison with ChaRM in the Solution Manager, REALTECH Transport Management is ready for use in no time. The feedback from the production systems is provided to the developers via the REALTECH Assessment Services with the automated Continuous Improvement service. In our experience, the performance and quality of in-house developments of our customers in SAP can be optimized if these are transparent for developers.
